All About Samantha

A luminous spark of infinite discovery burns with authenticity and honesty: Samantha Able is an artist possessed of an expressive voice revealed through candid lyrics, evocative melodies, eloquent songcraft and graceful musicality.

She might seem relatively new in her role of a singer-songwriter, but the New York City resident is a life-long devotee to the power of music. As an actress, Samantha has amassed a diverse resume of film, television and stage credits. Skilled at transforming into multiple characters, with her songs, she is now evolving into her most significant role as she plays herself.

As a multi-disciplinary artist, Samantha says that music has always been her first love. “I’ve played piano since I was five. My parents never had to beg me to practice,” she confirms. Growing up in Bowie, Maryland, Samantha was also inspired by Eva Cassidy, an artist from her hometown, who despite her short life, made an indelible impression.

Although she was classically trained as a pianist, Samantha enrolled at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts-Stella Adler Studio of Acting in Manhattan. “Acting is much more social,” she notes. “I wasn’t on a bench by myself practicing.” New York was a perfect locale for the ambitious and diligent artist. “I’ve always felt that I belonged to the city,” she avows.

The classical training provides melodic touchstones as she writes melodies. “Classical music can be very complicated, but there is always a very clear distinct melody and a hook that you connect with emotionally,” she says.  An affinity for jazz and musical theater are also influences. “Some of my songs on piano come in between those three genres. And when I’m writing on guitar which I don’t know how to play as well, my songs come out simpler.”

Samantha notes that up until now, music has been a private endeavor. “I have always been shy and vulnerable with my music, I think because I always turned to it as a personal kind of therapy. But the big acting projects that I booked were because they heard a song that I wrote, or because I play piano – it was always that extra boost that got me the job.”

While living in New York, Samantha reconnected with a high school friend who was creating a video series highlighting singer-songwriters in different cities. He invited Samantha to be a guest to track and perform one of her songs, “Sound of a Heartbreak,” captured in a powerful video. A representative from Warm Audio, one of the segment’s sponsors, reached out and invited Samantha to be a featured artist on their platform. Through this endeavor, she was introduced to producer, Dante Lattanzi with whom she now records.

While she is at home in the recording studio, her next step will be transferring that level of assurance to the live stage. “I want listeners to understand where my music comes from, what I’m writing about, and why it sounds the way it does,” she concludes. “I would love them to recognize that I’m going through a whirlwind with the newness of coming into music, and to join me on this journey.”
